Biography

Daniel Memmi retired as a professor at the Department of Computer Science of UQAM from 2004 to 2017, after more than 20 years as a researcher in computer science at the CNRS in France, first in Orsay and then in Grenoble. He has a dual background in linguistics and computer science: an M.A. in linguistics from the University of Chicago (1973), a doctorate in linguistics from the Université de Paris-7 (1979) and a doctorate in computer science from the Université de Paris-Sud (1987). He has long worked in Artificial Intelligence and cognitive science, more particularly in automatic natural language processing, using symbolic and then connectionist methods. He is now interested in collaborative information retrieval, social network modeling and virtual communities.
