Legacy Project – Implementing an Anonymous Authentication and Low Latency m-Health Solution

Minimizing response time without compromising privacy


This project proposed a mobile health (m-health) solution for the medical Internet of Things aimed at balancing response speed, reliability of results, and privacy protection. Faced with the limitations of cloud computing and edge computing—such as high latency due to network congestion, distance from the end user, and security vulnerabilities— the approach integrates Named Functions Networking (NFN) with a Software-Defined Network (SDN) architecture to minimize overall response time while offering dynamic management and a comprehensive overview of the system. The solution collects and analyzes users’ physiological data to rapidly detect symptoms of a virus and limit its spread, and relies on an anonymous authentication protocol that protects the privacy of the medical and personal data exchanged. An analysis of the security model confirmed the intended security features, while simulations showed that the solution outperforms a baseline edge computing scenario in terms of average response time, and concordant numerical and simulated results for overall latency.
